Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market
725 Exterior Street, Bronx, NY
Plaza Construction has been hired as the Construction Manager for the
redevelopment of 16.5 acres of former food/produce market and the
Bronx Mens House of Detention into 1 million SF of retail space and it’s
required parking. Much of the historic stonework (including the BMHD
guard house, visitor’s entrance, and frieze panel band) will be salvaged
and utilized in the construction. The PROW Building, a V-configured
structure, will be renovated while maintaining the existing general
appearance.
Two 500,000 SF multi-story “big box” retail buildings will be constructed.
Other smaller buildings will be used for medium & small retail as
well as restaurants. Home Depot, Staples, Bed Bath and Beyond,
Target, Best Buy, and Marshall’s are just a few of the future tenants. A
1-million SF multi-level parking garage structure will also be built onsite.
Challenges include the expansion
of an off ramp for the
Major Deegan Expressway, the
complete replacement of all
utilities, storm & sanitary
sewer, water, gas, telephone
and electric for 1400 feet of
Exterior Street, accommodating
the foundations for the
MDE widening, and remediations
of the entire 16.5 acres
under the DEP’s Brown Fields
program.
The project includes a LEEDS agreement which obligates re-use of
materials. This will be achieved by salvaging all masonry and concrete
from the demolished buildings and turning that material into recycled
concrete aggregate or recycled concrete. This process will be performed
on-site utilizing crushing equipment.
The grand opening is scheduled for September 2009.
