Brooklyn Navy Yard Buildings 28/123/128
As the Construction Manager, Plaza assisted the Architect and Engineer in identifying structural modifications and reinforcing required to the existing steel and foundations at the Brooklyn Navy Yard to convert into a Green Manufacturing Complex. The Complex has been compromised since the building has been unused for the past 50 years.
The project included the demolition of an existing 215,000 square feet building leaving the existing structure intact, and was re-clad with a Metal Span insulated standing seam roof and exterior wall panels, Metal Span, and Graham Aluminum and Kolbe Wood Windows.
Due to the configuration of the building with sloped roofs, setbacks and clear spans, access around the building was difficult. This was challenging because the project is located at a major crossroad within the industrial facility requiring streets around the building to remain open. Plaza worked with the Owner to make sure traffic flow is maintained and, more importantly, safe.
The project is designed to comply with a Silver Certification according to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System. The building will be constructed according to the requirements of the NYC Building Code.
We achieved a minimum of 30% MWBE participation. Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. also encourages hiring residents from the local community and intends to include significant LBE participation.
The structure is a National Register of Historical Places.
