Tin Building-Exterior
Construction of the new Landmark Tin Building consisted of replacing the historic Fulton Fish Market building, once one of the world’s largest fish markets. The new Tin Building features a faithful replica of the classic tin facade of the original fish market building. It provides spectacular views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines. The reconstructed landmark, three-story building, is the future home of celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s curated food market.
Plaza Construction was selected to demolish the original building, salvaging selected historic elements such as cast iron columns and rivetted trusswork, then reconstruct the new building about 33 feet east of its original location. A rooftop generator was also installed. The neo-classical design consists of a corrugated metal façade with decorative two-story sheet-metal pilasters. The structure was rebuilt piece by piece restoring it to its 19th-century glory. Relocating the building moved it further from the FDR Drive and allowed the structure to be raised above the flood plain. In addition, the structurally unstable pier was demolished and rebuilt where the building sits atop. The process of constructing the Building and Pier involved approvals and entitlements from the following entities:
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
- New York State Department of Environment Conservation (DEC)
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Fisheries)
- NYC Small Business Services (SBS)
- State Historic Preservation Officer (SHIPO)
- NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission
- NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)
- NYC Department of Transportation (DOT)
