CRRC North America Railcar Factory
CRRC USA Rail Corp. was awarded the contract from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for the design and manufacture of 284 Orange and Red Line Heavy Rail Subway cars in Springfield, Massachusetts. These cutting-edge vehicles incorporate microprocessor technology and passenger comfort that include automatic deployed bridge plate assemblies for those requiring mobile devices. As a condition of the award, CRRC was required to build a new manufacturing facility and chose Plaza Construction as their design builder.
Plaza’s overall responsibility included both the design and construction of the 205,000 square-foot High Bay Railcar assembly facility, and 2,240 foot dynamic test track. The factory building is about 300 by 700 feet, and is big enough for three and a half football fields. In addition to incorporating $10 million of owner-supplied equipment into the 40 acre project, Plaza installed six overhead bridge cranes from five to twenty-five ton capacity. Plaza also installed a one (1) MW shop DC traction system and a three (3) MW site DC traction power system for the assembly and testing of the rail cars.
