Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market
The Bronx Terminal Market project is a redevelopment of 16.5 acres of a former food/produce market and the Bronx Mens House of Detention into one million square-feet of retail space with a one million square-foot, 3,000 space multi-level parking garage structure. Much of the historic stonework (including the BMHD guard house, visitor’s entrance, and frieze panel band) was salvaged and utilized in the construction. The PROW Building, a V configured structure, was renovated while maintaining the existing general appearance.
There are two 500,000 square feet multi-story “big box” retail buildings and other smaller buildings used for small and medium retail space as well as restaurants. Home Depot, Staples, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, Toys R Us, Best Buy, and Marshall’s are just a few of the tenants.
Challenges included expanding an off ramp for the Major Deegan Expressway, replacing all utilities, storm & sanitary sewer, water, gas, telephone and electric for 1400 feet of Exterior Street, accommodating the foundations for the MDE widening, and remediating the entire 16.5 acres under the DEP’s Brown Fields program.
The project includes a LEED agreement which obligates re-use of materials. This was achieved by salvaging all masonry and concrete from the demolished buildings and turning that material into recycled concrete aggregate or recycled concrete. The process was performed on-site utilizing crushing equipment.
The project won the Top Project Award from New York Construction.
